A leading Italian existentialist, Abbagnano developed a 'philosophy of the possible.' He critiqued fellow existentialists for either denying human potential, arguing that efforts are futile in a meaningless universe, or for exaggerating it, positing capabilities beyond our reach. His later work embraced a more naturalistic and scientific philosophical approach, though he remained critical of the complacency found in prevailing scientific worldviews. He sought a balance between acknowledging human limitations and recognizing the potential for freedom and action.
