      Transforming Inner Mongolia

Commerce, Migration, and Colonization on the Qing Frontier

      • 356 pages
      • 13 hours of reading

Focusing on Han Chinese migration during the Qing period, the book examines its profound social, economic, and political effects on Inner Mongolia. Yi Wang connects local historical developments to broader global movements, illustrating how Inner Mongolia became integrated into the emerging nation-state of China and subsequently into the global capitalist economy. The analysis highlights the complexities of migration and its lasting impact on regional identity and economic structures.

      A Century of Change

Beijing's Urban Structure in the 20th Century

      • 218 pages
      • 8 hours of reading

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Beijing’s urban structure in the 20th century, analyzing essential social and economic changes in the housing sector. Focusing on the urban changes that took place under the market economy after 1978 and beyond, the book addresses the demolition of courtyard houses in Beijing’s old city, the relocation of low-income families from the old city, the government’s role regarding housing in the city, and residential segregation in Beijing. Expanding on the author’s PhD thesis at the University of Cambridge, it is illustrated with a wealth of historic photos and maps of Beijing. Presenting relevant descriptions, extensive literature and case studies, the book offers a valuable resource for students and scholars of architecture, urban studies and Chinese studies. First published in 2013 by Pace in Hong Kong, it has since been added to the libraries of many distinguished universities, including Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Columbia, Yale, Stanford, Cornell, U Penn, NYU, UC Berkeley, Hong Kong University, UBC in Canada and the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.

This thesis focuses on magnetic reconnection processes in the boundary layer of the interplanetary magnetic cloud. Magnetic reconnection is an important and frontier topic in the realm of physics. Various physical phenomena can be observed during the reconnection process but lots of them are not fully understood. This thesis provides the first observational evidence of energetic electrons associated with magnetic reconnection in the solar wind and discusses the particle acceleration problems. In addition, after analyzing the particle flux variations in Magnetic Cloud Boundary Layer, the thesis proposes a possible new criterion for the identification of magnetic reconnection in the solar wind. These tantalizing results could be particular clues to understand the dynamical problems in magnetic reconnection processes.

Focusing on the fabrication and performance of nanometer materials, the book delves into various thermite reactions involving aluminum and metal oxide nanocomposites. It explores the impact initiation of nanostructured aluminum-magnesium alloys and investigates the reaction mechanisms of aluminum/iron-oxide composites. Additionally, the text covers the fabrication and performance of nanometer HNIW and HMX, as well as the thermodynamics and kinetics of nanometer nitramines' thermolysis, highlighting mechanisms that affect the sensitivity of nanometer RDX.
