Using Customization Tools to Retrieve Information

      • 100 pages
      • 4 hours of reading

The book explores three experiments focusing on how customization tools can enhance information indexing in computer desktop environments. The first experiment reveals that users are more likely to customize when costs are low and benefits are high. The second highlights how these tools enable a balance between internal memory and external cues, significantly affecting performance based on information needs. The final experiment indicates that less efficient communication methods result in fewer help-seeking behaviors, leading to sub-optimal outcomes. Ultimately, it emphasizes the importance of adaptable customization tools for effective information retrieval.

    • This thesis focuses on magnetic reconnection processes in the boundary layer of the interplanetary magnetic cloud. Magnetic reconnection is an important and frontier topic in the realm of physics. Various physical phenomena can be observed during the reconnection process but lots of them are not fully understood. This thesis provides the first observational evidence of energetic electrons associated with magnetic reconnection in the solar wind and discusses the particle acceleration problems. In addition, after analyzing the particle flux variations in Magnetic Cloud Boundary Layer, the thesis proposes a possible new criterion for the identification of magnetic reconnection in the solar wind. These tantalizing results could be particular clues to understand the dynamical problems in magnetic reconnection processes.

Beijing's Urban Structure in the 20th Century

      • 218 pages
      • 8 hours of reading

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Beijing’s urban structure in the 20th century, analyzing essential social and economic changes in the housing sector. Focusing on the urban changes that took place under the market economy after 1978 and beyond, the book addresses the demolition of courtyard houses in Beijing’s old city, the relocation of low-income families from the old city, the government’s role regarding housing in the city, and residential segregation in Beijing. Expanding on the author’s PhD thesis at the University of Cambridge, it is illustrated with a wealth of historic photos and maps of Beijing. Presenting relevant descriptions, extensive literature and case studies, the book offers a valuable resource for students and scholars of architecture, urban studies and Chinese studies. First published in 2013 by Pace in Hong Kong, it has since been added to the libraries of many distinguished universities, including Harvard, MIT, Princeton, Columbia, Yale, Stanford, Cornell, U Penn, NYU, UC Berkeley, Hong Kong University, UBC in Canada and the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.
