Tehdy, 29. srpna, byla nečekaně přetržena pětapadesátiletá éra panování Jagellonců v českém státě. Mladičký, dvacetiletý král Ludvík Jagellonský podstoupil se svou nekvalitní, nepříliš odhodlanou armádou nerovnou řež s přesilou tureckých nájezdníků u Moháče (na samém jihu dnešního Maďarska). Byl bleskově poražen a na útěku z bojiště se utopil v tamních močálech. Český svatováclavský trůn náhle osiřel právě tak jako uherský svatoštěpánský. Aktuálního obsahu nyní nabyly dřívější úmluvy Habsburků s Jagellonci o vzájemném dědění v podobném případě. A tak brzy po nešťastné moháčské bitvě získal českou královskou korunu třiadvacetiletý Ferdinand I. Habsburský.
