(1942–1944), přináší žánrově rozmanité útvary od slavných sloupků „Jak to vidím já“ přes literární recenze až po imaginární rozhovor s Jonathanem Swiftem či krutě sebezpytné obsáhlé eseje Ohlédnutí za španělskou válkou nebo Anglický národ. Na jednu stranu Orwell uplatňuje nesmiřitelný postoj levicového politického komentátora, který analyzuje soudobou anglickou společnost, nemilosrdně tepe sociální nerovnost a odhaluje ideologické pokrytectví. V jiné poloze však uplatňuje smysl pro detaily, jichž si všímá v životě lidí vnímaných jako individuality, nikoli jen bezejmenná masa tvořící dohromady množinu anglického národa či španělských republikánů. Popisuje-li „obyčejné“, anonymní aktéry dějinných událostí, vnímá je, i pokud stojí na opačné straně barikády, především jako lidské jedince, již mají v jeho očích všichni stejný nárok na štěstí, natož na samotný život. Jak říká v titulní eseji „Ohlédnutí za španělskou válkou“: „…Přišel jsem zastřelit „fašistu“, ale člověk, který si přidržuje kalhoty, není „fašista“, je to očividně blízký tvor, stejný jako vy, a vám se nechce ho zastřelit.“
