Though Northanger Abbey is one of Jane Austen's earliest novels, it was not published until after her death--well after she'd established her reputation with works such as Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. the novel is modeled after the day's popular romances and Gothic thrillers, which it then proceeds to ridicule. The heroine is Catherine Morland, who encounters upper-crust society at Bath, falls in love, and becomes targeted by misinformed fortune-seekers. After moving to Northanger Abbey, her imagination goes to work and dreams up mysteries that lead to various social disasters.

Pride and Prejudice is a novel of manners about the romantic pas de deux between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, two perfectly suited lovers who, at first, find each other insufferable. Despite Elizabeth’s disdain for Darcy, fate seems determined to keep throwing this pair together, and Darcy, almost in spite of himself, makes revelations causing Elizabeth to question everything she believes. Set in a time when marrying well was a woman’s only way to assure a secure and comfortable future, Pride and Prejudice is one of the best-loved novels of all time.

Jak se z talentovaného dramatika a básníka stal jeden z největších autorů v dějinách literatury? V Shapirově nebývale živém líčení můžeme sledovat, co Shakespeare v roce 1599 četl, jaké hry viděl a s kým spolupracoval, stejně tak jako dějinné události, které hýbaly alžbětinskou Anglií. Výsledek už známe: v tomto událostmi nabitém roce Shakespeare investuje do nového divadla Globe a po večerech (!) napíše hned čtyři hry – Jindřicha V., Julia Caesara, Jak se vám líbí a konečně Hamleta – snad nejobdivovanější hru všech dob. Čtvrtým svazkem, Spisovatelé a leviatan, se uzavírá souborné vydání esejí George Orwella, které obsahuje celkem 241 esejí, analýz, recenzí a novinových sloupků z pera slavného spisovatele a novináře. V tomto závěrečném dílu, pokrývajícím roky 1947–1949 si můžeme přečíst další sloupky „Jak to vidím já“, které známe už z předchozího svazku, Orwellovy recenze (např. na román Jádro věci Grahama Greena nebo esej „Lidská duše za socialismu od Oscara Wildea“), ale samozřejmě i úvahy politické. Například esej „K evropské jednotě“ z r.1947, v němž ještě Orwell stihl zařadit Československo mezi země s „tradicí demokratického socialismu“ bude pro čtenáře nepochybně zajímavý i dnes.
