Collective identity has been a dominant theme throughout the history of modern Irish drama, from the time of the Irish Literary Theatre up till the cultural changes that have resulted from the economic boom of the late 1990s. This book focuses on playwrights from W.B. Yeats and J.M. Synge to Sean OCasey, Denis Johnston, Brian Friel, Stewart Parker and Martin McDonagh and discusses the variegated ironic interactions of their work with the discourse of Irishness, highlighting the difficulties entailed in essentialist definitions of identity, be they called nationalist, post-colonial or otherwise. At the same time, the book points out the sheer amount of theatrical and thematic innovation the ironic relationship with identity has brought about over the decades.

Martin McDonagh zde rozehrává svoji jedinečnou "drsnou komedii", naplněnou autorovým drsným, ale trefným humorem. Nezastaví se před ničím, nešetří nikoho. Brilantní dialogy a groteskní nadsázka zobrazují svět nefungujících vztahů i pochybných mravních hodnot. Budete se smát i brečet. Podtitul: mizerný příběh jednoho krušného osudu. Nejlepší humoristický román napsaný v moderní irštině. Satira na přístup městských intelektuálů a úředníků k irsky mluvícímu venkovu, která paroduje mimo jiné autobiografické romány irských venkovanů (které se dají přirovnat k roli Babičky v osnovách našich škol). Nevysmívá se však jejich autorům, ale idealizování těchto textů a stereotypu, který na jejich základě vznikl. Knihu autor napsal irsky, pod pseudonymem Myles na gCopaleen; do angličtiny byla přeložena roku 1973.

Toto vydání je souhrnem dochovaných děl, která Petr Škrabánek napsal o Joyceových Finnegans Wake. Obsahuje i revidovanou verzi významného Slovanského slovníku, který byl původně publikován v bulletinu Wake Newslitter v 70. letech. Najdeme tu i články týkající se irské angličtiny, klínového písma, hebrejštiny, afarštiny, sino-japonštiny a "struktury" Finnegans Wake. Škrabánkův příspěvek k vědecké práci a genetické kritice týkající se Joyceovy knihy je rozhodně nezanedbatelný. Toto je první sbírka Škrabánkových esejí v knižní podobě a jde o zásadní četbu pro každého, koho Joyceovo významné dílo zajímá.
