Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Erzählwerk des in Prag lebenden Schriftstellers Bohumil Hrabal (geb. 1914), der zu den bedeutendsten tschechischen Autoren der Gegenwart gehört. Es handelt sich um die erste umfassende Untersuchung von Hrabals Poetik sowie seiner Stellung innerhalb der Literatur seines Landes. Einen Schwerpunkt bildet die Problematik der siebziger Jahre, während denen das Schaffen des Dichters klar in einen inoffiziell verbreiteten und einen veröffentlichten Teil zerfällt. Am Beispiel einer Interpretation der verschiedenen Varianten von Allzu laute Einsamkeit (Prílis hlucná samota, 1976) versucht die Verfasserin, die Rolle von Zensur und Selbstzensur aufzuzeigen. Das Schicksal Bohumil Hrabals und die Geschichte seines Werks illustrieren auf exemplarische Weise eine kohärente künstlerische Entwicklung unter den sich ständig wandelnden kulturpolitischen Verhältnissen der Tschechoslowakei.

První stránky Hrabalovy autobiografické trilogie Svatby v domě, Vita nuova a Proluky spatřily světlo světa koncem sedmdesátých let dvacátého století, tedy v době, kdy spisovatel až na výjimky nesměl ve své vlasti oficiálně publikovat (ve stejné době mimochodem vznikala další Hrabalova vrcholná díla Něžný barbar a Příliš hlučná samota). Prvního vydání se tedy všechny tři knihy dočkaly v zahraničí. Přesto se jedná o jedny z nejlepších Hrabalových próz. Celá trilogie obsahuje sumu spisovatelových životních zkušeností a vydává jasné svědectví o jeho originálním umění.

Laughable Loves is a collection of stories that first appeared in print in Prague before 1968, but was then banned. The seven stories are all concerned with love, or rather with the complex erotic games and stratagems employed by women and especially men as they try to come to terms with needs and impulses that can start a terrifying train of events.
