Huikai Wumen Biography

The Chan master Wumen Huikai is most renowned as the compiler and commentator of a collection of 48 koans in The Gateless Gate. Wumen's teaching style was deeply influenced by master Dahui Zonggao and his emphasis on "Great Doubt" as a key tool for achieving enlightenment. Wumen believed in blocking all avenues of escape for the student, hence the "gateless barrier." Whatever activity the student proposed, Wumen rejected, believing this denial leads to deeper understanding.
