As a former student of the École normale supérieure and holder of a literary studies aggregation, he now teaches French at a middle school. He was an avid reader throughout his childhood and began writing at a young age, publishing his first novel in 1984. When writing for young adults, his constant aim is to offer them books he would have loved to read himself at their age. He draws upon his memories and benefits from his interactions with students who are the age of his novel's protagonists. Since 1994, Jean-Philippe Arrou-Vignod has also served as a consultant for Gallimard Jeunesse's fiction collections and directs their new 'Hors Piste' series.
