Rond 1950 was Olof Helmersson een beroemd predikant, die door zijn bevlogen preken hele dorpen wist te bekeren – sommige mensen bekeerde hij zelfs meerdere malen. The wonderful women are Bella, married, mother of seven-year-old Thomas, and Rosa, married, mother of two daughters, including the enterprising Renee. The story opens in the summer of 1961, and covers the years in which their children grow into young adults through to the 1970s.

This novel, written in 1974 and now published for the first time in English, is the first volume of a tetralogy which follows a Swedish community through a hundred years of recent history to the present day.
