The legendary Love and Rockets comic book series continues with a new paperback collection celebrating its 25th anniversary. This first volume features the adventures of Maggie, her pixie-like best friend and occasional lover Hopey, and their circle of friends, including the glamorous Penny Century, the eccentric mentor Izzy, the aging wrestler Rena Titanon, and Maggie's unattainable love interest, Rand Race. Moving away from the sci-fi elements of earlier stories, Hernandez focuses on the more realistic setting of the fictional Los Angeles barrio, Hoppers, and the lives of young Mexican-Americans and punk rockers. A standout story is "The Death of Speedy," showcasing Jaime's storytelling mastery; despite the title revealing the outcome, Speedy's decline remains compelling and surprising. This volume also explores Maggie's tumultuous romance with Ray D., leading to tension and a separation from Hopey, which will be central to the upcoming "Wigwam Bam." Additionally, several stories, including wrestling narratives featuring Rena and the unsettling "Izzy meets the Devil" tale, "Flies on the Ceiling," were not included in the hardcover Locas collection.
