Michael Laurence Nyman is an English composer of minimalist music, pianist, librettist, and musicologist. His output is recognized for numerous film scores, many developed through a sustained collaboration with filmmaker Peter Greenaway, alongside the multi-platinum soundtrack for The Piano. Nyman often favors writing operas over other musical forms. He has also composed concerti and string quartets, frequently performed by his own Michael Nyman Band, for whom he also performs as a pianist.

The two-piano version was recorded by the Labeque sisters for their CD Minimalist Dream House on the KML/Deutsche Grammophon label.
