Jean Rhys, a novelist from the Caribbean, gained prominence in the mid-20th century for her evocative fiction. Her early works from the 1920s and 1930s foreshadowed her later impact. It was not until the publication of Wide Sargasso Sea in 1966, a novel often considered a "prequel" to Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, that she emerged as a significant literary figure.
