One of a series designed as an introduction to literature. It is graded into six levels, and each book contains an introduction and exercises. It is designed for students of English as a foreign or as a second language, and for reluctant readers. This is a family saga set in Australia.

The Sound and the Fury is the tragedy of the Compson family, featuring some of the most memorable characters in literature: beautiful, rebellious Caddy; the manchild Benjy; haunted, neurotic Quentin; Jason, the brutal cynic; and Dilsey, their black servant. Their lives fragmented and harrowed by history and legacy, the character’s voices and actions mesh to create what is arguably Faulkner’s masterpiece and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Warum schreibt der Mensch? Damit er, wenn ihm ein Stück Geschichte im Hals stecken bleibt, es wieder hervorbringen kann. Damit er, wenn er sich selbst nicht grob behandeln will, jemanden erschafft, dem er ungeniert seine Gedanken mitteilen kann. Damit er, wenn die Welt um ihn herum flüssig ist, sein Kristallgitter gestaltet. Wem schreibt der Mensch? Daraus folgt, dass er für sich selbst schreibt. Aber um sich davon zu befreien, überzeugt er sich, dass das, was er schreibt, wichtig ist. Dass er anderen etwas sagt. Dass er damit dient. Und dass er dadurch, genau dadurch, irgendwohin gehört. Die Sarus würden den Gegensatz von außen und innen zu einer Einheit verbinden, denn es gibt keinen Häretiker, wenn es keinen Inquisitor gibt, Verfolgte und Verfolger bestätigen die Wahrheit des anderen.
