Frank MacShane

Frank MacShane was a literary biographer dedicated to applying rigorous critical standards to popular novelists like Raymond Chandler and John O'Hara, whose works were often overlooked by academic critics. He focused on writers with substantial followings who weren't automatically accepted into the highest literary ranks. Through his biographies, he sought to illuminate their literary style and keen observations of American life, thereby elevating their critical standing. MacShane also dedicated himself to teaching and championing nonfiction and translation.
