La Lettre apostolique " Novo millennio ineunte " a été signée par le pape, place Saint-Pierre, le 6 janvier 2001, en la solennité de l'Épiphanie, à l'occasion de la fermeture de la porte sainte. C'est le document qui tire les conclusions de l'Année jubilaire. Il fait apparaître la nécessité d'une Église qui, après une année d'intense expérience spirituelle, se sent appelée à " avancer au large " (" duc in altum ! ") selon l'ordre donné par Jésus à Pierre (voir Lc 5, 4), en affrontant les défis de l'avenir. La porte sainte se ferme, mais la " la porte vivante ", le Christ Jésus, qu'elle symbolise, reste plus que jamais ouverte. Ce n'est pas à la grisaille du quotidien que l'Église retourne après l'enthousiasme jubilaire. Au contraire, un nouvel élan apostolique l'attend, animé et soutenu par la confiance en la présence du Christ et dans la force de l'Esprit.
In de zomer van 1993 stelde het Italiaanse radio- en televisiestation RAI een interview voor niet paus Johannes Paulus II. Het zou het eerste uitgebreide televisie interview worden in de geschiedenis van het pausschap. De Italiaanse auteur en journalist Vittorio Messori viel de eer te beurt de vragen voor te bereiden. Helaas kon door omstandigheden het vraaggesprek geen doorgang vinden. Paus Johannes Paulus II was echter zo geïntrigeerd door de vragen, dat hij' ze graag schriftelijk wilde beantwoorden. Messori stelt met opzet vragen die ver buiten de gebruikelijke kerkelijke en politieke onderwerpen omgaan en die de paus bewegen zich uit te spreken over de basis van zijn leven en van de kerk: het geloof. Dat wil zeggen het probleem om in onze tijd in God te geloven; de rol van de katholieke Kerk in de huidige maatschappij; de vergelijking met andere religies; de goddelijkheid van Jezus van Nazareth; de oecumenische vooruitzichten; de crisis die volgde na het Tweede Vaticaanse Concilie. Door de grote openhartigheid gunnen deze bladzijden ons een duidelijke blik in de geest en het hart van de paus. Zijn visie op het geloof biedt- zowel voor gelovigen als voor niet-gelovigen -veel interessante stof tot nadenken.
