From idolatry to iconoclasm: exploring passionate reactions to imagery across history Images have always elicited passionate responses, triggering reactions of veneration as well as destruction, of idolatry as well as iconoclasm. But what is the origin of their unique power? German art historian Gottfried Boehm (born 1942) seeks to answer this question, tracing the affective potential of images across Western history.

Die Welt, hat ein Philosoph geschrieben, sei alles, was der Fall ist. Aber um dies feststellen zu können, bedarf es eines archimedischen Punkts. Der Künstler Max Weiler (1910-2001) hinterließ nicht nur ein vielgestaltiges malerisches Œuvre, sondern zählt auch zu den bedeutendsten und produktivsten europäischen Zeichnern seiner Generation. In mehr als siebzig Jahren Schaffenstätigkeit entstand ein auf knapp 3.500 Arbeiten geschätztes zeichnerisches Werk, das sich in so gut wie allen Formaten und Techniken ausdrückt und in dem der Künstler seinen individuellen Kosmos – die Verschränkung von innerer und äußerer Natur – in vielfältigen Ausdrucksformen realisiert. Die Publikation gibt einen konzisen Überblick über das zeichnerische Schaffen Max Weilers und stellt die Arbeiten in ihrer Entwicklung und Komplexität wie auch in ihrem Verhältnis zur Malerei dar. Weird Narrations in Marvellous Colours Neo Rauch is the most important painter of his generation at present times. This becomes apparent not only by the numerous tributes in recent years, but also and particularly by the international presence of his paintings and the ongoing discussion about his works. On the occasion of the retrospective at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg now this first overview of Rauch’s fascinating work is published.
