    • Weird Narrations in Marvellous Colours Neo Rauch is the most important painter of his generation at present times. This becomes apparent not only by the numerous tributes in recent years, but also and particularly by the international presence of his paintings and the ongoing discussion about his works. On the occasion of the retrospective at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg now this first overview of Rauch’s fascinating work is published. In the pictures of the painter, born in 1960 in Leipzig, peculiar figures from past times appear. They get together in surreal sceneries and interiors to tell enigmatic stories about the present. Between cartoon and historic painting the artist develops with a distinctive colouring dreamlike sequences, which seem to be timeless and historically important at the same time. The exhibition and the catalogue give a comprehensive insight into the work of this painter from Leipzig from 1993 until today. The publication goes into the questions, which emerge from this curious cosmos: What are the pictures about? Which roles are played in them? What is the meaning of the different colours? With an introduction by Markus Brüderlin and articles by Harald Kunde, Gottfried Boehm, Holger Broeker, Wolfgang Büscher et al. - international first retrospective - elaborate explanation of the works - high quality illustrations

No other subject inspired Henri Matisse with such passion throughout his career as the female figure in interior settings. This is the most comprehensive publication to cover the topic of women in the work of the great regenerator of European painting, and in so doing, it covers the full spectrum of Matisse's creative evolution, from the small, somber, early pictures to the masterly compositions of his Fauvist phase, the intimate pictorial inventions of the Nice period, and finally the luminous paper cutouts of his late work. Many of the interiors show women reading, sleeping or daydreaming, passive figures enveloped in Oriental fabrics, costumed as odalisques or reclining on chaise longues. Additional motifs include the artist and his model, the artist's studio, the portrait, the still-life, and the view from a window. Figure Color Space offers an in-depth survey of this important subject in Matisse's work, through which he developed and continually explored his rich and imaginative repertoire of forms and colors. Along with paintings from all periods, it includes sculptures, drawings, cutouts and prints, as well as historical studio photographs by Cartier-Bresson, Brassae, Hal ne Adant and others. A richly illustrated biography completes this exquisite presentation.

Ellsworth Kelly's oeuvre can perhaps best be summed up by a phrase from Gottfried Boehm: "In between: this is the shortest formula of his aesthetics." With abstract expressionism at its peak, and based on the traditions of the abstract avant-garde in dialogue with color field painting, Kelly developed a vocabulary that left panel painting behind. In a conscious questioning of the conditions that underlie perception, he not only explores the relationships of painting and wall, sculpture and space, but also, and in particular, the relationship between viewer and work. A selection of more than 40 pieces of art from the past five decades, most of them from the collection of the artist, this book offers an expert investigation into the artistic development of one of the leading exponents of international postwar art.

    • From idolatry to iconoclasm: exploring passionate reactions to imagery across history Images have always elicited passionate responses, triggering reactions of veneration as well as destruction, of idolatry as well as iconoclasm. But what is the origin of their unique power? German art historian Gottfried Boehm (born 1942) seeks to answer this question, tracing the affective potential of images across Western history.

    • In the history of 20th-century figurative art, the Italian painter Giorgio Morandi stands out as an individual artist, capturing the simple beauty of light on forms through deft brushwork and subtle coloration. This volume brings together some 110 of his most important works.
