Mascha Kaléko
June 7, 1907 – January 21, 1975
Mascha Kaléko was a German-language poet associated with the New Objectivity movement. Her work is characterized by urban lyricism delivered with an ironically tender, melancholic tone. As the only prominent female poet of New Objectivity, she was often compared to her male counterparts, sometimes dubbed the "female Ringelnatz" or "female Kästner." Her poems, also known as "Monday poems," resonate through their unadorned and direct language. Set to music as chansons, they were famously performed by singers like Hanne Wieder and continue to be presented by artists such as Rainer Bielfeldt.
