      Since the first edition over a decade ago, significant new information on tropical diseases has emerged. Advances in technology, such as hybridization techniques, flow cytometry, image analysis, telepathology, and serologic analysis, have enhanced our understanding. The growth of global tourism and increased emigration from developing countries to developed nations have altered the landscape of tropical diseases, leading to their more frequent occurrence in temperate regions.
