    September 12, 1829 – January 4, 1880

Anselm Feuerbach was a preeminent classicist painter of the 19th-century German school. His work drew deeply from the classical world, embodying the statuesque dignity and simplicity reminiscent of Greek art. Feuerbach underscored the critical importance of mastering technique to express even the loftiest ideas, following in the tradition of Italian colorists and demonstrating a profound knowledge of classical subjects. His paintings continue to command admiration for their formal perfection and intellectual depth.
