Per Kirkeby, The Complete Brick Sculptures, The Installations is the first of three volumes documenting the brick works of the Danish artist Per Kirkeby in their entirety and diversity. This rst volume focuses on Per Kirkeby’s temporary brick sculptures made for galleries and museums between 1966 and 2017, as well as a series of temporary stage sets created for theatre and film. For the first time this part of the artist’s brick sculptures is assembled and analyzed as a whole. Together the three volumes aim to present a complete catalogue and a range of perspectives on Per Kirkeby’s relationship with bricks spanning ve decades.

Das Verhältnis von Architektur und Malerei im Werk von Per Kirkeby wird in einer konzentrierten Rückschau gewürdigt. Kirkeby, geboren 1938 in Kopenhagen, gilt als bedeutendster Vertreter der dänischen Gegenwartskunst und verband gekonnt figurative und abstrakte Kunst. Seine großformatigen Werke, geprägt von leuchtenden Farben auf rauen Leinwänden, nehmen stets Bezug auf die Natur und überzeugen durch Sinnlichkeit, ohne ins Romantische abzudriften. Internationale Bekanntheit erlangte er durch Ausstellungen in renommierten Institutionen wie der Tate Modern und dem MoMA sowie durch seine Teilnahme an der Documenta und der Venedig Biennale. Deutschland war lange Zeit das Zentrum seines Schaffens, wo er als Professor an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe und der Städelschule in Frankfurt tätig war und enge Freundschaften zu bedeutenden Künstlern pflegte. Die Stiftung Insel Hombroich präsentiert nun eine Retrospektive, die Kirkebys sechs begehbare Backsteinskulpturen und Werke aus fünf Jahrzehnten umfasst. Diese Ausstellung lenkt den Blick auf die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen Architektur, Skulptur und Malerei sowie Raum, Licht und Schatten. Der Katalog enthält Texte zur Baugeschichte des Stiftungsareals sowie einen Essay des Kunsthistorikers Denys Zacharopoulos und Gespräche über Kirkeby und die Verknüpfung von Architektur und bildender Kunst.

Per Kirkeby (born 1938) is one of the most important living Danish artists . His oeuvre includes a rich production of paintings, sculptures, films, graphic and literary works. The artist's international reputation is in high degree attached to his paintings and sculptural works, while his impressive graphic production has not received the same attention yet . With the exhibition PER KIRKEBY COMPLETE Museum Jorn finally puts Per Kirkeby's graphics in the limelight. There appears no less than 1,200 etchings which he since 1975 regularly has donated to the museum. With his eclectic oeuvre, Per Kirkeby is one of most prominent representatives of contemporary art. After receiving his doctorate in geology, he turned his attention to visual art. The impressions he gained during various expeditions in the far north are reflected in his artistic works. Polar breeze and gentle lapping of the waves seem to permeate his paintings, drawings, watercolours, and prints as well as his sculptures, stage designs, films, structures, and literary works. The volume unfolds the extent of Kirkeby's thought and creative output: the subtle colour palette of his painting; the structural design, for instance, of his brick buildings; the scrutiny of his own vision, which is discernible, for example, in his sculptures and prints.

This will be the first comprehensive collection of the writings by the Danish artist Per Kirkeby (b. 1938) in the English language. The book is co-published by Spring Publications and the Michael Werner Gallery in New York and Berlin, in conjunction with the artist's first American retrospective, which opens at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. in October 2012.

This book is a continuation of the first 500-page critical work by Ane Hejlskov Larsen.
