Julius Wolff (1834 - 1910), popularer Schriftsteller der Grunderzeit, gehorte zu den so genannten "Butzenscheibendichtern," die altertumelnde Verserzahlungen uber historische Stoffe und Sagen schrieben. Neben Reimerzahlungen schrieb Wolff aber auch eine Reihe von Romanen. "Der Sulfmeister" spielt im 15. Jahrhundert in Luneburg; im Zentrum steht die Gestalt des Bottchermeisters Gotthard Henneberg, der sich gegenuber den Patriziern der Stadt ebenso durchzusetzen versteht wie gegen die in die Stadt dragenden Zunfte und der nach seiner Berufung an die Spitze des Gemeinwesens die Freiheit der Stadt gegen das Ansinnen des Herzogs zu verteidigen weiss. Wolff gelingt es, das Leben in einer mittelalterlichen Stadt in all ihren Teilen uberaus lebendig und wirklichkeitsnah zu schildern. Der vorliegende Band ist der zweite Teil der Geschichte.
