Karel van Mander was a Flemish painter and writer who established his practice in the Netherlands from 1583 onward. His influence on the artistic and literary landscape of the region was considerable. His writings demonstrate a profound grasp of artistic principles and the traditions of his time. He was a pivotal figure during the Dutch Golden Age.
Although Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610) painted on an almost miniature scale and died very young from, it was said, the overwork that resulted from the intensity of his methods, his paintings remain some of the most strangely poetical in the history of Western art. This book provides information on Elsheimer's life and sadly curtailed career.

Karel van Mander (1548 - 1606), Dichter, Schriftsteller, Maler und Zeichner aus Westflandern, verfasste 1604 mit dem "Schilder-Boeck" sein bekanntestes Werk, dessen erster Teil das hier vorliegende "Lehrgedicht" bildet, "das sich an Malerlehrlinge richtet, allerdings keine Anleitungen zur Praxis des Malens bietet, sondern sich auf einem hohen literarischen Niveau mit den Grundlagen der Kunst befasst."
