Karel van Mander was a Flemish painter and writer who established his practice in the Netherlands from 1583 onward. His influence on the artistic and literary landscape of the region was considerable. His writings demonstrate a profound grasp of artistic principles and the traditions of his time. He was a pivotal figure during the Dutch Golden Age.
Although Adam Elsheimer (1578-1610) painted on an almost miniature scale and died very young from, it was said, the overwork that resulted from the intensity of his methods, his paintings remain some of the most strangely poetical in the history of Western art.
