Z pověření francouzské vlády má expedice poslance Barsaca prozkoumat úroveň života domorodců ve Francouzském Súdánu. Výprava je však přepadena a unesena do tajemného města Blacklandu, postaveného uprostřed pouště pod vedením zločince Harryho Killera a vědce Marcela Camareta, jehož důvěřivosti Killer zneužil pro své cíle. Blackland je město s úžasnými technickými vymoženostmi, kde je elektřina a telefon samozřejmostí. Otroci, na jejichž práci město závisí, jsou však bezohledně vykořisťováni. Killerovi pomocníci podnikají letecké nájezdy do okolí, aby si opatřili nové otroky, přičemž využívají Camaretův vynález, letadlo schopné uletět 5000 km bez přistání.
