Adelantandose a su tiempo y utilizando el tema clasico del naufrago, Verne expone la vision de los que sufren la desaparicion, y expone el sentir de dos jovenes por la ausencia de su padre y la desesperacion de no volver a verlo; es una telemaquia (vease Telemaco).
