The Jungle Book key characters are Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves, and Shere Khan, the biggest tiger in India. As Baloo the sleepy brown bear, Bagheera the cunning black panther, Kaa the python, and his other animal friends teach their beloved "man-cub" the ways of the jungle, Mowgli gains the strength and wisdom he needs for his frightful fight with Shere Khan, the tiger who robbed him of his human family. But there are also the tales of Rikki-tikki-tavi the mongoose and his "great war" against the vicious cobras Nag and Nagaina; of Toomai, who watches the elephants dance; and of Kotick the white seal, who swims in the Bering Sea.

Postavy v knize jsou jasně rozděleny – na jedné straně bídák Sarkany, jeho přisluhovač Zirone, Silas Toronthal, kryjící všechno svými penězi, a zneuznaný nápadník Carpena. Na straně druhé ušlechtilí bojovníci za svobodu národa Matyáš Sandorf, Štěpán Bathory, Ladislav Zathmar a šlechetný Ondřej Ferrato. Myšlenka maďarského protihabsburského povstání je sice hezká, ale po roce 1866 patří skutečně do říše fantazie. Jako kdyby Verne přestal číst noviny, protože i po 15 letech od událostí hovoří stále o Rakousku a nikoli o Rakousku-Uhersku.

Zdeňkem Hobzíkem volně převyprávěný vědeckofantastický román o cestě na Měsíc z pera známého Vernova epigona a spolupracovníka, vlastním jménem Paschala Grousseta (1844–1909); člena Pařížské komuny z r. 1871. Východiskem a pozadím děje je střední Súdán v době, kdy zde docházík osvobozeneckému boji súdánského lidu proti egyptské tyranii. Zde hlavní hrdina provede odvážný pokus založený na využití antigravitační síly a dosáhne tak se skupinkou svých spolupracovníků povrchu Měsíce. Napětí a vzrušení přináší obtížná a nakonec šťastně absolvovaná cesta zpět.

In 1878 appeared Dick Sands, the epic of the slave trade. This picture of the wilds of Africa, its adventures and its dangers, the savage hunting both of beasts and men, has always been a favorite among Verne's readers.It contains no marvels, no inventions, but merely, amid stirring scenes and actions seeks to convey two truthful impressions. One is the traveler's teaching the geographical information, the picture of Africa as explorers, botanists, and zoologists have found it. Z pověření francouzské vlády má expedice poslance Barsaca prozkoumat úroveň života domorodců ve Francouzském Súdánu. Výprava je však přepadena a unesena do tajemného města Blacklandu, postaveného uprostřed pouště pod vedením zločince Harryho Killera a vědce Marcela Camareta, jehož důvěřivosti Killer zneužil pro své cíle. Ten si uvědomí, že pracuje pro lupiče, a přidá se na stranu vzbouřenců. V bojích nakonec Killer i Camaret zahynou a Blackland skončí v troskách. Po Camaretových vynálezech zůstávají jen kusé zprávy očitých svědků, kteří přežili a dostali se do Timbuktu.
