Best known for his monochromatic works with synthetic-feeling combed surfaces, painter Jason Martin (born in New Jersey in 1970) here presents recent drawings, paintings and sculptural pieces, as well as his first artworks actually made for a sacred space--the Church of the Apostles in Gütersloh, Germany.
Horst Ademeit documented the presence of 'cold rays', unseen negative forces, for almost 20 years (1989–2007). The inventory he accumulated and added to almost every day during this period was his attempt to study them: thousands of Polaroid and digital photographs, several leporello notebooks full of meticulously logged data and around 3,000 small spheres made of various kinds of wood.At the beginning of each day he also produced a 'Tagesbild' (picture of the day), numbered images of newspapers, groceries and measuring instruments arranged on the kitchen table, which were intended to record the respective cold ray exposure.English and German text.

Coral reefs, with their brilliant colours, their interwoven and tangled forms and their curving and rippling surfaces, are the central theme of the Australian sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim. As scientists, they analyse the aesthetic of mathematical theories and biological phenomena. The Institute for Figuring? (IFF), which they founded in Los Angeles in 2005, aims to promote public understanding for the poetic and aesthetic dimensions of science, mathematics and technology and to simultaneously draw attention to matters involving nature and the environment. The sisters combine the methods of the traditional needlework technique of crocheting with the beauties of maritime ecosystems and their complex algorithmic structures. Wie könnte die hauptsächlich westliche Sammlung der Nationalgalerie heute aussehen, hätte ein globales Kunstverständnis ihren Aufbau geprägt? Mit Blick auf Kunstwerke aus außereuropäischen Zentren der Moderne und ihre Aktivitäten werden nicht erzählte Geschichten und aus dem Blick geratene Zusammenhänge aufgegriffen und weiterentwickelt. Die Nationalgalerie Berlin unterzieht ihre Sammlung einer kritischen Revision und wendet den Blick dabei auf jene Sammlungsbereiche, die nicht im Fokus des westlichen Kunstverständnisses stehen. Ausgangspunkte bilden dabei z. B. Heinrich Vogelers Weg in die Sowjetunion, der Aufenthalt des Dadaisten Tomoyoshi Murayama im Berlin der 1920er-Jahre oder Joseph Beuys’ Kollaborationen mit Nicolás García Uriburu. Es ergibt sich eine Erzählung der Kunst von 1900 bis in die Gegenwart, die aus globaler Perspektive punktuell historische, internationale und transregionale Verbindungen zwischen Künstlern und kulturellen Kontexten aufgreift und erforscht.

Vadim Zakharov (*1959, in Dushanbe, USSR, lives in Moscow and Berlin) belongs to the circle of artists known as the Moscow Conceptualists. His crucial role as archivist and protagonist of this movement has shaped his manner of working since the late 1970s, a manner which is characterized by exceptional creativity and independent artistic thinking. Participation and actionism have always been key forms of activity in his career. Udo Kittelmann, director of the Nationalgalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, is the first non-Russian curator of the Russian Pavilion and is presenting a new installation by the artist, with whom he has been working since 1995. What makes a museum what it is? The answer Udo Kittelmann has given as the Director since 2002 of the Frankfurt/Main Museum for Modern Art is clear "The collection is the supporting pillar of any museum. The focus of the work lies in the build-up, the cultivation and the expansion of the collection, in the exhibition of others." The voluminous What's New, Pussycat? introduces 200 of the finest works with which Kittellmann has put his money where his mouth is, and documents the ongoing evolution of the important collection he helms. Featured artists include Francis Alys, Marcel Duchamp, Lucian Freud, Douglas Gordan, On Kawara, Bruce Nauman, Steven Parrino, David Reed, Santiago Sierra, Elaine Sturtevant, Kara Walker and Andy Warhol.

Die Surrealisten kommen. Die über 150 Bilder stammen aus einer der weltweit bedeutendsten Privatsammlungen surrealistischer Kunst - der Sammlung Ulla und Heiner Pietzsch - und ergänzen sich mit Werken aus dem Bestand des Museums zu einer einzigartigen Gesamtschau. Der dazu erscheinende Ausstellungskatalog zeigt neben Hauptwerken maßgeblicher Surrealisten wie Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Max Ernst, Joan Miró und Yves Tanguy auch frühe Bilder von Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky und Mark Rothko, Künstler des Abstrakten Expressionismus, der aus den Wurzeln des Surrealismus entstand. Selten ließ sich die Entwicklung dieser Kunstbewegung so umfassend und hochkarätig verfolgen. Ergänzt wird die Publikation durch historische Porträtfotografien der Künstler, von nicht weniger berühmten Fotografen wie Arnold Newman, Man Ray und Brassai.
Die Ausstellung zeigt über 150 Bilder aus der Sammlung Ulla und Heiner Pietzsch sowie Werke des Museums, darunter Hauptwerke von Surrealisten wie Dalí und Magritte. Der Katalog dokumentiert auch frühe Arbeiten von Pollock und Rothko und enthält historische Porträtfotografien der Künstler von renommierten Fotografen.
