Coral reefs, with their brilliant colours, their interwoven and tangled forms and their curving and rippling surfaces, are the central theme of the Australian sisters Margaret and Christine Wertheim. As scientists, they analyse the aesthetic of mathematical theories and biological phenomena. The Institute for Figuring? (IFF), which they founded in Los Angeles in 2005, aims to promote public understanding for the poetic and aesthetic dimensions of science, mathematics and technology and to simultaneously draw attention to matters involving nature and the environment. The sisters combine the methods of the traditional needlework technique of crocheting with the beauties of maritime ecosystems and their complex algorithmic structures. Paintings of a Sensual Immediacy As artists, they were self-taught and created a cosmos of images that still captivates us today with its sensual immediacy and has made a lasting mark in art history on the work of non-academically trained artists: Henri Rousseau (1844-1910), Camille Bombois (1883-1970), André Bauchant (1873-1958), Louis Vivin (1861-1939) and Séraphine Louis (1864-1942). They are counted among the so-called circle of the "painters of the sacred heart"; their scenarios, often borrowed from nature, especially flowers and fruits, but also people in parks and landscapes, indicate a closeness to nature, a sensitive approach to the things of the immediate environment, with which they apparently sought to escape the coldness of uprising modernism. These French pioneers of authentic art were discovered by the German art historian Wilhelm Uhde (1874-1947), who organized their first joint exhibition in Paris in 1928.

Wie könnte die hauptsächlich westliche Sammlung der Nationalgalerie heute aussehen, hätte ein globales Kunstverständnis ihren Aufbau geprägt? Mit Blick auf Kunstwerke aus außereuropäischen Zentren der Moderne und ihre Aktivitäten werden nicht erzählte Geschichten und aus dem Blick geratene Zusammenhänge aufgegriffen und weiterentwickelt. Die Nationalgalerie Berlin unterzieht ihre Sammlung einer kritischen Revision und wendet den Blick dabei auf jene Sammlungsbereiche, die nicht im Fokus des westlichen Kunstverständnisses stehen. Ausgangspunkte bilden dabei z. B. Heinrich Vogelers Weg in die Sowjetunion, der Aufenthalt des Dadaisten Tomoyoshi Murayama im Berlin der 1920er-Jahre oder Joseph Beuys’ Kollaborationen mit Nicolás García Uriburu. Es ergibt sich eine Erzählung der Kunst von 1900 bis in die Gegenwart, die aus globaler Perspektive punktuell historische, internationale und transregionale Verbindungen zwischen Künstlern und kulturellen Kontexten aufgreift und erforscht.

Der Hamburger Bahnhof präsentiert in „A Few Free Years" eine Auswahl aus den in den Jahren 2008 und 2014 erfolgten Schenkungen überwiegend europäischer und nordamerikanischer Kunst seit den 1960er Jahren. Sie erweitern die Bestände der Nationalgalerie um raumgreifende Installationen, Gemälde, Skulpturen, Zeichnungen, Fotografien, Filme und Videos von mehr als 60 renommierten Künstlern. Zu sehen sind unter anderem Installationen von Richard Jackson, Paul McCarthy, Dieter Roth, Jason Rhoades und Bruce Nauman, Fotografien von Cindy Sherman und Wolfgang Tillmans sowie filmische Werke von Marcel Broodthaers, David Claerbout und Nathalie Djurberg.

More Sky was initially published in 1970 as a loose-leaf ring binder, then in the 1973 edition reproduced in facsimile here. The book may be considered the first compendium of Piene’s work after the ZERO period in Germany. The title itself is a programmatic attempt to expand the arts. More sky—that was the dream of Otto Piene and his generation, to overcome at last the narrow confines of museums and instead to turn public space, the air and the sky into a site where art happens. Nature as a model for the arts: as was already the case in experiments within the Bauhaus tradition, Piene intended to execute his artistic works in the dimensions of earth, water and fire, and ultimately into technological media as well. The vibrant, colorful cover of his book, featuring a hand-painted title, the sun and a floating cloud, perfectly reflects this exhilarating utopia of a better world, closer to nature.

Im Zentrum des Bandes zur Ausstellung im Hamburger Bahnhof steht der Zyklus der »weißen Bilder« Martin Kippenbergers aus dem Jahr 1991. Die Installation besteht aus elf weißen Leinwänden, die bündig in die weißen Wände der Ausstellungsräume eingelassen sind, dass Bild und Hintergrund nahezu Eins werden. Die Bilder unterschiedlicher Formate tragen kaum sichtbare unzusammenhängende Sätze in ungelenker Kinderschrift, die in weißem Lack Kippenbergers Urteil über das eigene Werk ausweisen: sehr gut - very good. Die Abbildungen wurden in einem, an die vom Künstler vorgegebene Installation angelehnten, Verfahren reproduziert. Neben den elf Werken enthält der Katalog Aufnahmen der Ausstellungsräume sowie Essays zu Werk und Ausstellung in deutscher und englischer Sprache.
