More about the book

The volume contains pottery from three important find sites of the Near East, Khirbat al-Minya on the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee [excavations 1932-1939], Baalbek in Lebanon [excavations 1967-1975], and Resafa in northern Syria [city excavation 1997-1999]. In Khirbat al-Minya there is representative profane architecture of the early Islamic period [Umayyad and Abbasid periods, 8th-9th century] with relevant pottery such as „cream ware“ and common ware pottery as well as finds and features from the 12th century onwards [Ayyubid and Mamluk periods]. In Baalbek Medieval fine wares were found such as Abbasid splash wares of the 9th-10th century, Fatimid wares of the 10th-11th century, Minis wares of the 11th-12th century, Raqqa or Rusafa ware of the 12th-13th century, Celadon and its imitations, Damascus ware of the 13th-14th century, blue& white ware of the 14th-15th century as well as imitations of Ottoman Iznik wares of the 16th century. From Resafa come 22,000 sherds of the 4th/5th-13th century with a focus in the Middle Ages. Apart from north African-east Roman ware there are e. g. Raqqa and Resafa ware and misfired pottery indicating on-site production of glazed and common wares.
