More about the book
The Cold War was a „total war“. The contradictions between the two great powers were equally vital at all military, political, societal and cultural levels as well as in everyday life. Not least of all, the conflict took place in schools and textbooks. Especially schoolbooks are considered indicators of diachronic and synchronic self-descriptions of a society. The present volume examines the representations of the Cold War and divided Germany between 1945/49 and 1990 in a comparative perspective. The contributions analyse different viewpoints in textbooks during the Cold War as well as the representations of the conflict in current schoolbooks from Denmark, Germany, France and Italy.
