More about the book
This special issue contains invited papers from the International Conference on Community Genetics: From DNA to the Community, held in June 2000 in Jonquiere (Quebec), Canada. The field of community genetics encompasses the integration and transfer to the community of knowledge gained from fundamental or clinical research related to the human genome. Reflecting recent experiences and projects in community genetics worldwide, the papers consider both urban and rural environments, the industrialized world as well as developing countries. Ethical, legal, geographical and social aspects of genetic knowledge transfer are discussed. In addition, examples of community actions in genetics, initiated by associations such as the US genetic alliance and the Corporation for Research and Action on Hereditary Diseases (CORAMH), are given. This report is recommended reading not only for medical geneticists, but also for any member of the medical profession involved in the transfer of genetic information.
