More about the book

As a former bus driver for MacBrayne, Robert Grieves is particularly well-qualified to write about transport in this area, where the company reigned supreme on the road and the water. With their extensive fleet of buses, lorries and steamers MacBrayne could carry you wherever you needed to go. This impressive and varied collection of photographs includes ferries such as the Corran and Ballachulish with unexpected views of a Model T Ford on the top of Ben Nevis, a Model A ascending the mountain, and a BSA motorcycle, also on the summit. You'll see a train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct and a driver and signalman exchanging tablets at Banavie station - the protocol for assuring safe passage on a stretch of single track on the Mallaig-bound line. There are also photographs of two of the railway lines operated by the British Aluminium Company. Scenes on Fort William pier feature MacBraynes buses and steamers, whilst other views show employees of MacBraynes buses emptying mail boxes, one of their duties on rural routes.
