More about the book
This narrative goes beyond the typical tale of a Holocaust survivor, as it chronicles the extraordinary journey of an individual who became an Olympic athlete shortly after liberation. Michael Freedland captures this story through extensive interviews with Ben, his family, fellow survivors, and residents from his hometown in Poland. Ben grew up in Pietrkow, where he was known as a protector, especially to his sister, the only other family member to survive. When the Nazis invaded, his mother and one sister were killed, but Ben and his father initially survived in the town ghetto by working in a glass factory and woodwork plant. Their fate changed when they were sent to Buchenwald concentration camp, where his father perished. Eventually liberated by the Red Army and taken to Theresienstadt, Ben later moved to England as part of "The Boys." His athletic talent shone through as he represented Britain in weightlifting at two Olympic Games. After a successful business career, he dedicated himself to uniting survivors, founding the 45 Aid Society, and collaborating with various organizations to support Holocaust education. Now in his mid-80s, Ben actively participates in the Claims Conference, advocating for survivors and promoting reconciliation with Germany and Poland, both of which have honored him for his contributions.
