The Office of "Magister Militum" in the 4th Century CE

This monograph explores the magistri militum, top officers in the late Roman army, between 340 and 395 CE. It argues that they capitalized on political vacuums to redefine their roles, impacting the Western Roman Empire's decline. Utilizing prosopography and social network analysis, it reassesses the balance of Roman and barbarian generals and offers new insights for future research.
