Set in New York around 1900, "Martin Dressler" follows the rise of a German immigrant's son who pursues the American Dream. Starting as a cigar salesman, he becomes a hotel manager and successful entrepreneur, ultimately constructing the magnificent Grand Cosmo, which threatens his happiness. Steven Millhauser won the Pulitzer Prize for this tale of ambition.
