Matthew Arnold, an English poet and cultural critic, explored social issues through his sage writing. His role as a school inspector, which he found tedious, provided him with deep insights into provincial English culture. After publishing multiple poetry collections, he became the first to deliver lectures in English as the Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1857.
