Kilmeny of the Orchard

Set on Prince Edward Island, the story follows Eric Marshall, a schoolteacher who falls in love with Kilmeny, a mute girl with perfect hearing. Their romance faces challenges as Kilmeny believes her disability would hinder Eric's life. When Eric's friend, a throat doctor, reveals that Kilmeny can only speak through a deep psychological need, circumstances force her to find her voice. After a dramatic confrontation with a jealous rival, Kilmeny finally speaks, leading to their marriage and a celebration of love's triumph over adversity.
