It draws from his correspondence, autobiographical writings, and poetry, supported by extensive historical documentation. The prologue discusses his father's quest for salvation, while the first chapter contrasts Pastorius' dual identity as a pious immigrant and scholar-poet, delving into the cultural influences of his youth that led to his conversion to Lutheran Pietism and subsequent emigration.
