A morning jog turns fatal for HMO executive Tim Markham when he is struck by a car and later dies under suspicious circumstances in his own hospital. The situation escalates when his family is murdered, leading Lt. Abe Glitsky to suspect Dr. Eric Kensing, who has both motive and opportunity. As Glitsky navigates the investigation with the help of inexperienced rookies, defense attorney Dismas Hardy must protect his client while also safeguarding a close friend, all while uncovering a conspiracy that threatens their lives.
