Elsie Machle White was the co-author of Our Neighbors The Chinese published by Rinehart & Co. in 1945. She was born in China to Presbyterian missionaries and placed in a mission home at Wooster University where she met Wilbert W. White. They married at Endeavor, Pennsylvania in 1912. In 1917 he enlisted in the Air Corp and became a flying ace. He was killed in a heroic crash in 1918 leaving a legacy of challenges as the mother of a deaf child, poor health, a commitment to her mother, and uncertainty in her career.
