I never thought I would write another letter to No. 12 Arcisstraße, my grandparents' address for 50 years. In 1984, Golo Mann addressed the President of the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich, recalling that his Pringsheim grandparents lived in a neo-renaissance mansion at that location. The National Socialists appropriated the classical setting of Königsplatz for their propaganda, constructing two Central Party buildings in 1937 at the corner of Arcis- and Brienner Straße. The southern building served administrative purposes, while the northern, known as the Führerbau, was for Hitler and his staff, now designated as No. 12 Arcisstraße. After 1945, this site became the Amerika Haus Cultural Centre and, from 1957, the main building of the Munich University of Music and Theatre. In this richly illustrated work, Alexander Krause explores the complex history of No. 12 Arcisstraße, which is intertwined with Munich's cultural and intellectual legacy as well as a darker chapter of world history. Edition monacensia publishes works by 19th and 20th-century Munich writers preserved in the Monacensia Literaturarchiv und Bibliothek, including reprints and first editions, along with biographies, exhibition catalogues, and books focused on Munich and Bavaria. Translated by Christina Noel Malcolm.
