Is there a language of transcendence that transcends conventional categories such as monism, theism, pantheism, and various notions of divinity? This collection of studies explores whether it is possible to articulate transcendence or divinity, and if so, what limitations apply to such discourse. In contemporary theology and philosophy of religion, there is a growing recognition that traditional terms from the Western tradition fail to adequately convey the divine. Increased engagement with concepts of ‘immanence’ and ‘transcendence’ in Hindu and Buddhist thought complicates our understanding while offering the potential for deeper religious inquiry. The established distinction between ‘personal’ and ‘impersonal’ also gains new significance in Asian contexts, where the concept of ‘person’ faces critical reassessment. Moving beyond these binary categories reveals the mystical richness of religious traditions, highlighting their openness and integrating vital aspects of both perspectives. With curiosity and caution, the contributors acknowledge the diversity of historical religious traditions while seeking a new language that connects them, aiming to establish a common ground for understanding.

Bernd Jochen Hilberath ist 60 Jahre alt geworden. Er hat in den 1980-er und 90-er Jahren entscheidende Beiträge für ein communio-theologisches Denken in Trinitätstheologie und Ekklesiologie beigesteuert. Die langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit Matthias Scharer führte zu einer Synthese des communio-theologischen Denkens mit einer Theologie in praktisch-theologischer Perspektive, die bei den Lebensprozessen von Menschen ihren Ausgang nimmt und sich in reflexiver Begleitung auf diese zurückbezieht.
