Educating the educators: international approaches to scaling-up professional development in mathematics and science education
Proceedings of the Conference hosted jointly by project mascil (mathematics and science for life) and the German Centre for Mathematics Education (DZLM), 15 -16 December 2014 in Essen, Germany
Teachers play a crucial role in achieving creative and sustainable learning outcomes in mathematics and science education, fostering young people's competencies, and empowering them to be critically thinking, responsible citizens. Professional development (PD) for teachers is essential for driving change in these fields across Europe. Despite its importance, there is limited knowledge on how to effectively and sustainably scale up PD. The conference 'Educating the Educators - International approaches to scaling-up professional development in mathematics and science education' held in December 2014 in Essen, Germany, aimed to initiate discourse and facilitate international exchange on this vital topic. Hosted by the EU-funded project mascil, coordinated at the University of Freiburg, and the DZLM, the event gathered researchers, teacher educators, multipliers, and teachers engaged in math and science education. This volume captures the participants' experiences, providing background information, conference aims, conclusions, and insights into future needs and trends. The papers are organized into four tracks, each focusing on different methods for scaling up PD: (1) Utilizing multipliers in face-to-face courses, (2) Blended learning and e-learning support, (3) Dissemination through materials, and (4) Professional learning communities.
