Angelus Silesius was a German mystic and poet whose work explored profound spiritual themes. His collection of hymns, Heilige Seelenlust, includes pieces that have become part of the German Protestant hymnal. However, his most significant contribution is Geistreiche Sinn- und Schluss-reime, later known as Cherubic Pilgrim, a collection of rhymed couplets. These verses delve into a unique mystical panentheism, drawing inspiration from earlier mystics and delighting in paradoxes. Silesius posited a divine essence of love that necessitates manifestation in finite form, suggesting an essential unity between God and humanity.

Here are poetic texts by one of the great German mystics of the 17th century, Angelus Silesius (1624-1677). These texts, written in the form of the epigram, are still used today for contemplative prayer and as part of German Christmas folklore.
