While some of the more renowned establishments – 17fuffzig in the Spreewald for instance – proved to be even better than expected, we also want to showcase the small independent producers: an organic ice-cream parlour, goat farms, farm shops, the traditional East German bakery in Oranienburg or a seasonal café nestled behind the Elbe dyke. Prignitz is typical of the areas we visited while researching this book, as is Oderbruch. Both regions have a river at their heart and seemingly boundless rolling countryside and are permeated with a glorious feeling of expansiveness.
