To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg is presenting its extensive collection of contemporary art in what will be the largest survey of it to date. It includes more than 600 installations, groups of works, and large individual works of art in all media, dating back to the crucial year of 1968. The spectrum of the 100 artists ranges from Franz Ackermann, Doug Aitken, and Firelei Báez, to Mithu Sen and Sam Taylor-Johnson, all the way to Jeff Wall and Thomas Zipp. This elaborate, lavishly illustrated volume gathers texts written by about 100 international authors—curators, directors, gallerists, collectors, and architects—on the artists in the collection. It achieves a multifaceted, overall picture of the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg’s exquisite collection, as well as an impressive panorama of contemporary art from 1968 to the present. With the acquisition of key works of late modernism and important additions from contemporary art, a top-class collection has been built up. From a rather apolitical reservoir of fanatical supporters, so-called Ultras, in recent years diverse groups emerged who find themselves beyond the stadiums with their techniques of resistance in political actions, be it the Istanbul Gezi Park revolt in the summer of 2013, the Arab Spring in Egypt or the riots on Majdan in Kiev. They draw from football aesthetics such as flags, jerseys, songs and drums to mobilize the masses in public spaces. The socio-political potential of these groups, which already exist since the 1970s and which represents the currently fastest-growing youth subculture in Germany, is visually presented in the immersive installation by Wermke / Leinkauf. Matthew Day Jackson, geboren 1974 in Panorama City, Kalifornien, lebt und arbeitet in Brooklyn, New York. Er zählt zu den einfallsreichsten Künstlern seiner Generation. Seine innovativen Skulpturen, Bilder, Installationen, Fotografien und Videos beziehen sich auf die Geschichte der westlichen Kultur und des Fortschritts. Der Künstler integriert Elemente aus Technologie, Popkultur, Kunstgeschichte, Philosophie und Sport und verdichtet historische Fakten zu einem anschaulichen, ästhetischen Gewebe. Dabei setzt er sich kritisch mit der amerikanischen Geschichte auseinander. Die technisch perfekten Arbeiten hinterfragen etablierte Perspektiven auf die Welt und thematisieren das Wesen sowie die Zukunft des amerikanischen Traums. Zudem steht die Mythologisierung des eigenen Künstler-Selbst im Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens, das Körperlichkeit und die destruktiven Ergebnisse menschlicher Erfindungskraft in Beziehung setzt. Diese Monografie ist die umfangreichste zu Jacksons Werk und bietet mit großzügigen Abbildungen einen Überblick über seine künstlerische Entwicklung von 2003 bis heute. Beiträge von namhaften Autoren wie Jean Baudrillard, Andreas Beitin und Paul Virilio bereichern die Veröffentlichung, während die Werkbeschreibungen von Martin Hartung stammen.

Philipp Fürhofer (*1982 in Augsburg) ist ein Mann der Bühne: In seinen Leuchtkästen gestaltet der Künstler Szenerien, die er im Ausstellungszusammenhang wie Bilder an die Wand hängt oder zu skulpturalen Gruppen kombiniert. In Acrylgehäusen schichtet er bemalte, transluzente Bildträger und gefundene Objekte über- oder hintereinander, die im Zusammenspiel rätselhafte Porträts oder Landschaften aufscheinen lassen, deren Bedeutungsgehalt sich je nach Stärke der Illumination verschiebt. Auf durchaus vergleichbare Weise verführen Fürhofers große Bühnenbilder – zuletzt etwa für die Royal Opera in London mit einem Entwurf für Giuseppe Verdis Les vêpres siciliennes (Die sizilianische Vesper). Am Badischen Staatstheater Karlsruhe schuf er für Mieczyslaw Weinbergs Oper Die Passagierin eine von Projektionen durchleuchtete Bühnenanordnung, die alle handelnden und spielenden Elemente filtert. In seinem Bühnenbild für Eugen Onegin in der De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam vermischte er reale räumliche Situationen und eine kaleidoskopartige Traumvision aus Malerei, Spiegeln und Licht.

In “Platon’s Mirror” Kuball draws upon one of the most influential stories within European literature: Plato’s allegory of the cave in Book 7 of The Republic in which the philosopher draws a distinction between two forms of reality: the reality of the visible world and the (true) reality of ideas. Kuball presents simple yet highly effective installations using projectors, silver foil, photographs and videos that create perceptual and experiential spaces analogous to that of Plato’s cave. In doing so he translates the complex relationships among light source, reflection, silhouettes, and representation into seemingly endless stages of mediation, within which reality is continually newly constituted as the reality of its reflection.
