In ihrem Buch beschreibt die Ethnologin und Religionswissenschaftlerin Lidia Guzy die Struktur und Ausbreitung einer neuen asketischen Lehre in Indien. Das Buch zeigt exemplarisch Prozesse der Institutionalisierung von Religion und die Kreativität lokaler Kulturen, die Tradition und sozialen Wandel verbinden. Dank Reisen mit zwei Asketen konnte die Autorin den Alltag von Asketen und die Struktur eines asketischen Ordens ergründen. Durch das Leben bei Neukonvertiten in den Stammesgebieten konnte sie das ekstatische Profil der Lehre studieren, das vor allem durch Gesangsekstasen ritueller Spezialistinnen geprägt ist. In der Askese der Mönche lebt das populäre hinduistische Askese-Ideal weiter. Mit der Ekstase ritueller Spezialistinnen bleiben lokale Praktiken des südasiatischen Schamanismus bestehen. Das gesellschaftlich Neue zeigt sich stets in der neuen Ethik der abstinenten Lebensführung.
