Gotthold Ephraim Lessing

    January 22, 1729 – February 15, 1781

Gotthold Ephraim Lessing was a pivotal figure of the German Enlightenment, leaving an indelible mark on literature and philosophy. His plays and theoretical writings, characterized by wit and irony, profoundly influenced the development of German drama. Lessing masterfully employed dialogue to explore ideas from multiple perspectives, viewing truth as an ongoing process of approximation. He championed the evolution of bourgeois theater, and his works remain archetypes of later German drama.

Laocoon : an essay upon the limits of painting and poetry
    • According to Greek mythology, Laocoon was a Trojan priest who, along with his two sons, offended the gods. As punishment, the three were strangled by sea serpents. The discovery in 1506 of an ancient Greek sculpture showing the three figures in their death agony not only gave rise to renewed interest in the classical period but also created repercussions in the art world. It was this work of art that German dramatist and critic Gotthold Lessing used as a point of reference for his essay Laocoon. Originally published in 1766, Lessing's inspired meditation on the distinguishing characteristics of painting and poetry became a turning point in the study of Western art. His essay on the origins, forms, and influences of these art forms aided in framing modern conceptions of the artistic medium and helped establish modernist views of the uniqueness of the individual arts. A breakthrough vision in aesthetics, Laocoon is essential reading for anyone interested in poetry, art history, and the fine arts.

    • Excerpt from Emilia Galotti: Ein Trauerspiel in Funf Aufzugen Lachmann's text of Emilia Galotti is based on the last reprint of the drama published during the lifetime of the poet. This reprint is usually designated as 1772 d, as it was preceded by three others in the same year. There exists, however, a manuscript in the poet's own handwriting (now in the possession of the Royal Library at Berlin), which in four instances o ers a better text than the reprint, and which the editor has followed in the present edition. These cases are: (1) The ms. Reads non etwab anherm, while the reprint has non' etmae anbem (cf. P. 12, 1. (2) the ms. Has tie jungen Beute, the reprint hie innge Route (of. P. 23, l. According to strict rule the adjective in the first case after etmab should be in ected according to the strong declension, in the latter case after the definite article according to the weak declension. (3) While the ms. Contains the form netbirbt, the reprint has oerberbt (of. P. 26, l. 11) for which verbitbt is now commonly used. (4) The ms. Reads ibn mifien Iafien, the reprint has ibm, which is obsolete (of. P. 40, 1. Other variant readings of the ms., at least the principal ones, are mentioned in the notes.
